Continuing on from last week’s episode The Transformative Power of Creativity and Play – Part 1, where we talked about creativity… This week we are going to focus on play!!look at how important it is to our happiness right now.
What can you do right now to help relieve stress in your life? Play! How is play defined and how can we add more of it in our lives? Do we have to be creative to successfully play and reap the benefits? No! For instance some people’s play could be building a LEGO set with instructions. Conversely another individual may just like to create their own structure from scratch, with no instructions. Both are considered play! However, those of us that are not naturally creative with LEGO and need the instructions to enjoy the process, can get our creativity indulgence somewhere else.
Ultimately, the transformative power of creativity and play comes from our ability to relieve stress, make us more adaptable and ultimately help us improve our day to day executive functioning. Certainly the health benefits are the hidden power of creativity and play! Can you remember the last time you got so caught up in something that you lost your sense of time and self consciousness? Its a beautiful thing. We all need more of it in our lives!
Let’s start a conversation about adding play and creativity into our lives so we can live better now!
Play for me happens when I’m sewing and when I’m in the garden. My stumbling block is me. I find it hard to give myself the permission to spend the time on those activities. As my kids get older and more independent it’s getting easier, but it’s still a struggle to find un-interrupted time. They can help in the garden but I like to sew alone, that’s not easy when everyone is home all day long right now.
I hear you Andrea! I am learning to ask for my own time and space as I am not used to having to share it with everyone all the time. Its funny though, because of the podcast we are discussing things more as a family and getting more buy-in. Also, be getting each of us to discuss what is our “play” we have found that we realize when each other needs time for it. Thanks for sharing. Always great to hear from you! Do you sew things you need or things you want? And do you take orders? haha
That’s a great point Bona. I feel a family meeting is in order. I mostly alter clothes I already own to customize them, or for the kids. I used to sew all kinds of things from scratch both for fun and for need.
